Leprechaun Hunt

After lunch, we discovered a note from a leprechaun. We went on a search for clues around our classroom and school to find the pot of gold! What fun we had! The gold was found in Mrs. Diederich's office!

Kate reading one of the clues

Kailey searching for a clue.

Abby reading a clue to the class.

All of the letters spelled out where we would fine the treasure!

Ooey, Gooey, OOBLECK

As a part of Read Across America and Dr. Seuss' birthday, we read Bartholemew and the Oobleck. In science, we are studying solids and liquids. We made oobleck in science. Is oobleck a solid or a liquid? It was up to the first graders to find out!

When you punch it hard, it feels like a solid, but if you poke it slow it feels like a liquid. It pours, but you can also squeeze it. Oobleck has properties of both a solid AND a liquid! We can make oobleck act like both a solid and a liquid. A liquid like this is called a non-Newtonian fluid because it does not follow the rules that Newton discovered most liquids follow. Pretty cool, huh?

Here's the recipe for oobleck -- make some at home!

  • 2 cups cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • A few drops of food coloring
That should get you to a good starting place, then add more water or cornstarch until you reach the right consistency.

Check out the awesome pictures below of our ooey-gooey fun experiment!

Meet The Newest Member of our First Grade Family

Miss Abernathy is here for the remainder of the year to learn and teach during our Language Arts block. She is a student at Washburn University studying Elementary Education. I'm really excited for her to be in our classroom. Welcome, Miss Abernathy!

Mystery Reader!

We have enjoyed having many members of Kate's family come in and read to our class! Last Friday, Kate's grandpa came in to read us a very funny story called The Perfect Nest. We really enjoyed hearing about his chickens!
