Ooey, Gooey Oobleck

As a part of Read Across America and Dr. Seuss' birthday, we read Bartholemew and the Oobleck. In science, we are studying solids and liquids. We made oobleck in science. Is oobleck a solid or a liquid? It was up to the first graders to find out! When you punch it hard, it feels like a solid, but if you poke it slow it feels like a liquid. It pours, but you can also squeeze it. Oobleck has properties of both a solid AND a liquid! We can make oobleck act like both a solid and a liquid. A liquid like this is called a non-Newtonian fluid because it does not follow the rules that Newton discovered most liquids follow. Pretty cool, huh?

Here's the recipe for oobleck -- make some at home!

  • 2 cups cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • A few drops of food coloring
That should get you to a good starting place, then add more water or cornstarch until you reach the right consistency.

Check out the awesome pictures below of our ooey-gooey fun experiment!
