Mystery Readers in November!

We had two moms come in for our mystery reader time this month! A special thank you to Beth's mom (forgot to snap a picture!) for coming in and reading Skippy Jon Jones to our class! That is definitely a favorite of ours!

Ella's mom came in on her BIRTHDAY to read It's OK To Be Different. We especially liked the part about eating macaroni and cheese in the bathtub!

There are plenty of spots open for mystery reader in the 2nd half of the year! Please contact me if you are interested!

Thanksgiving Plays

We enjoyed having parents and grandparents watch our two Thanksgiving plays -- The Sound Effect Story and the ABCs of Thanksgiving. Thanks for coming!

Publishing Stories On Our iPads

Today, we used the app Scribble Press to publish our stories! Students are typing the words and drawing or taking pictures for their illustrations. I hope to find a way to share these on our blog!

We are loving the iPads -- the possibilities are endless!

New Books for our Library

A special thanks to the following friends who donated books to our classroom library during the book fair! Our whole class thanks you!

Too Purpley! My favorite color!

Can't wait to read all of the fun facts about dolphins!

Love adding new Christmas books to our shelves! Can't wait to read it to the class!

Pete the Cat Saves Christmas! You know this book will be a hit -- we love Pete!

Skype Mystery Reader

We had a special guest reader last Friday all the way from Georgia! Kate's aunt was our mystery reader for the week. We enjoyed the story Pete The Cat - I Love My White Shoes. It was the first Skype experience for many of the students and they were in awe that we could see and talk to someone so far away! Thanks, Tiffany!

Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Fire Truck

Mo Willems has been the author we have studied for the past couple weeks. We've enjoyed reading his books -- Knuffle Bunny, the Pigeon books, Elephant and Piggie --- we love them all! We decided to make an adaptation of the book Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus. We started by writing down our ideas as a class. Once we had the words just right, we drew illustrations to go with our new story. Finally, we used the app SonicPics to create our project. SonicPics is really easy to use, just upload pictures and record. Easy! I can't wait to get the iPads in our classroom and see what students can do with this type of digital storytelling. Enjoy our latest video project!

Book Picks for October

With the October book orders going home today, I thought I'd list my book picks for the month!

Since we are studying Mo Willems, the Silly Pigeon Set in the Seesaw book order gets my first pick! This pigeon is hilarious!

Sheep In A Jeep is a great rhyming book about sheep who go for a wild ride!

In the Lucky book order, my favorite is Junie B. First Grader - Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten (and Other Thankful Stuff). Junie B. Jones books are a great choice if your child is ready for chapter books. There is also a collection of Junie B. books in the Lucky order -- perfect for a gift!

Lastly, with the election coming up, Bad Kitty for President tops my wish list. We love all things Bad Kitty, even if he's not the most well behaved cat.

Star Walk

Students were able to view constellations using the app Star Walk on our iPod touch. Star Walk allows users to locate and identify constellations, planets, stars, and satellites based on where they are located. It uses the GPS in the iPod to show constellations that you should be able to see on a clear night from your exact location. SOOOOO cool!

We even found the location of Ursa Minor (the Little Dipper!)

Listen to Reading Launch

Last week, we launched the final part of our Daily 5 -- Listen to Reading! During this time, students will listen and read along to stories on our classroom iPods of the classroom computer using TumbleBooks.

Where Is Knuffle Bunny?

We are studying the author Mo Willems this week. We read 2 of his wonderful books -- Knuffle Bunny and Knuffle Bunny Too. Mo used a combination of black and white photographs and hand drawn art to create the illustrations in these books. We thought we'd give it a try and come up with our own Knuffle Bunny book.

So here is Where Is Knuffle Bunny? written and illustrated by Mrs. Mathes' First Grade Class.

Word Work Launch

Today we launched the 3rd part of the Daily 5 -- Word Work! This is a time when students will work on spelling sight words and eventually spelling list words! I introduced the iPad to the students, just the one I have to use until our labs are ready to use....and wow! They were so excited! In our class, we also have 3 iPod touch devices to use as well. We are a techy class!

Here are some pictures of the students during our Word Work launch today.

The first students to use the iPad!

Spelling our words with letter tiles....

and Popsicle sticks!
Using an iPod touch to spell the words...

and magnetic letters!
