Star Walk

Students were able to view constellations using the app Star Walk on our iPod touch. Star Walk allows users to locate and identify constellations, planets, stars, and satellites based on where they are located. It uses the GPS in the iPod to show constellations that you should be able to see on a clear night from your exact location. SOOOOO cool!

We even found the location of Ursa Minor (the Little Dipper!)

Bye Bye, Butterfly!

We have SO enjoyed having these little guys with us for a couple weeks! It was bittersweet to say goodbye to them today, but we were so glad they could finally enjoy the fresh air outside!

Trea'Anna was lucky enough to have a butterfly stay on her finger for a quick moment!

And a quick video of our last little guy, apparently "Mr. Gary", being set free. :) These kiddos just make me smile. :)

Force and Motion FUN!

We had a blast last week during science talking about force and motion. One of the activities we did was make MARSHMALLOW SHOOTERS!

We discussed and demonstrated that little force won't move an object very far (or very fast), but if you use BIG force, it will move faster and travel farther. Wow, they had fun practicing that with their marshmallows!

We also discussed how we can measure how far things move. We went outside and students had a turn to see how far they could launch their marshmallow. We used a tape measure to record the results.

Push and pull....force....measurement.....what a fun way to teach these concepts!!

Then, we discussed velocity and how objects move faster down an inclined plane set at a greater angle. We did a little experiment to prove this using our marble race track!

It took nearly 6 seconds for the marble to roll down the ramp at this incline!

At this incline, the marble rolled down in 1.66 seconds. Fast!

We set the incline at a different height, and the marble rolled down in 1.25 seconds. Faster!

At the greatest incline, it only took .78 seconds for the marble to run the track. FASTEST!

And then we had marble races, just for fun. :)

A Pumpkin Experiment (Class Photographer - Noah!)

We learned all about pumpkins this week to gear up for our fun field trip to the pumpkin patch!

We did a little experiment -- here was our question and hypothesis:

First, Mrs. Mathes cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin. We left all of the pulp and seeds inside.

Next, we scooped soil into the pumpkin.

Then, we watered the soil.

We put the pumpkin near a window and observe daily. Our hypothesis is that a pumpkin plant will sprout. We will have to wait patiently and see!

Noah, our classroom photographer, took these pictures!

On Cloud Nine!

We wrapped up our fantastic unit of study on weather with a week studying clouds! The students learned the 4 main types of clouds -- cumulus, cirrus, stratus, and cumulonimbus....but they also learned what cirro, strato, and alto mean when talking about clouds.

We've really been enjoying some fabulous weather, but it was not so conducive to cloud inspecting! Can you believe we only had 1 day last week with clouds in the sky! We took out our official cloud inspectors and got to work identifying the clouds in the sky. These will eventually go home, but we need to use them at school for just a couple more days. :)

OOH! Look! A cirrus cloud!

Cloud inspecting takes a lot of concentration.

Future meteorologists!

Then we had some fun during explorations, and made cloud dough! Once you feel this stuff, you'll know why it's called cloud dough. It's oh-so-soft and lots of fun!

It might look like ice cream...but don't eat it!
